SharePoint 2007 upgrade to 2010 for the financial organisation

This time we have got a job to migrate existing MOSS 2007 production environment to the new infrastructure having SharePoint 2010.

One of the main requirements was to also migrate a custom solution that plays an essential role in the companies business.

Migration: we have chosen database attach upgrade approach, because it organically fit into our scenario. Original MOSS 2007 was 32-bit (both Web Server and SQL Server) so the decision was made to install and initially configure SharePoint 2010 in the new environment and then backup databases on the original environment, restore them on the new SQL Server and then run database attach upgrade.

We were able to migrate custom solutions and it's data from the original Web sites. We ran the visual upgrade as well, but with an option to revert back to original design if required.

Just some things to bear in mind before doing an upgrade:

  • Meticulously check all software requirements and at least download all the necessary Service Packs, Cumulative Updates etc.
  • Make sure MOSS 2007 has at least Service Pack 2 installed
  • Have all the license keys handy, that means license keys of the software versions that you want to install
  • Make a backup and/or restore point before you make any major step during the upgrade
  • Uninstall all unknown features reported by pre-upgrade checker tool
  • Have all custom solutions installation packages handy and confirm with the vendor that they are compatible with SharePoint 2010
